artist statement

This piece is a contrast between two views, the female and the male gaze, showcasing the ways in which they differ. I wanted to draw attention to not only the female gaze so that it could have its moment and be highlighted but put the two concepts side by side to really prove how different they really are. I didn’t want to make one out to be worse than the other so they’re very similar in style in the ways that I presented them but the colour theme on the two canvases allow them to contrast a lot better being side by side. I was inspired by the way I like to look at things; the movies I enjoy, the people who appear on my social media, the clothes that I wear. Taking all of these things together I realized how differently we all see the world, especially when it comes to the media. People portray things so differently when it comes to art and it showcases what perspective we have so I wanted to take a closer look at that and allow other people to start thinking about it as well.

The green used in the female gaze is an example of androgyny, steering away from the typical blue and pink we see so often when discussing male and female. The greyscale in the male gaze adds a layer of depth and shadow while also insinuating this type of black and white way of looking at things.
